Letter to a Backslider

O backslider, desire to know Jesus Christ again!  The Bible says, For in Him we live, and move, and have our being (Acts 17:28a).

I have good news to tell you.  You didn’t get this letter by chance: it was written especially for you!  I wrote it due to a burden God put upon my heart for you.  You can rejoice in knowing this wonderful truth: God really loves you!

On the night of January 21, 1995, while I was earnestly praying, God’s Spirit fell mightily upon me and He ignited a “Fire” in my soul.  After that experience took place, I spent even more time that night praying, praising, and seeking God.  I felt a wonderful joy by being in God’s Presence.

I like to involve myself in Christian writing, so following this wonderful experience with God, I thought of a myriad of things I could write about.  One of those things being, Christians need to love God supremely!  As I began to dwell upon that fundamental truth, it became the subject I wanted most to write about.  Suddenly, though, while I was thinking of ideas I could use to begin writing on that theme, God totally changed my direction: He compelled me instead to write to backsliders!  I’ve always prayed for backsliders to get right with God again, but on that particular night, God greatly increased my love for them.  He impressed me with their tremendous need of having to “repent” and “return” to Him.

When I think about the divine occurrences that took place on that unforgettable night in 1995, I remember the concern God has for backsliders.  He exhibited His love in such a tender way for them that I am still moved by it today!

Friend, as you read this letter, please respect its content by giving it your undivided attention, for God deserves the same love and consideration that He has given you!  He loves you and He wants to become an essential part of your life.

When I Received a Burden for Backsliders

It was nearing 4:00am on January 21, 2005, when the words “DESIRE HIM AGAIN” came suddenly to my mind.  I knew the words came from God, for I was filled with deep emotion.  As I softly spoke the words out, a backslidden member of my family came to my mind.  I sobbed profusely for this loved one who was so close to my heart and I prayed for her to be saved.  Then I prayed for other backsliders who I knew.  Still crying, with tears heavily flowing down my face, I prayed for backsliders everywhere to be saved!  At that point, I knew God was urging me to give the precious words “DESIRE HIM AGAIN” to those who had fallen away from Him.

I couldn’t stop crying, and my precious loved one came to my mind again.  Another message filled my heart for her.  I so much wanted her to hear it that I actually spoke it out to her!  I cried, “Don’t give up!  Never give up!  Jesus wants you to love Him again!”

Backslider, I speak those same encouraging words to you: “Don’t give up!  Never give up!  Jesus wants you to love Him again!”  As you read this important message, please take it to heart!  I am delivering it by way of Christ’s love for you.

Do you realize that when a sinner’s life is finally over that he will reap hell, the lake of fire, and be eternally separated from God?  God wants to spare you of having such a disastrous end to your life.  Jesus said, He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son.  But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone (Rev. 21:7, 8).

O backslider, please take a hold of Jesus’ hand: He is your “Lifeline!”  Ask Him to forgive you of your sins and to come into your life again.  He will give you a miraculous peace that will pass all of your human understanding.

Jesus said, Come unto me all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest (Matt. 11:28).

A time is coming when Jesus will return to rapture His Church.  Christians do not know just when this mighty event will take place; therefore, they are getting themselves prepared for it!  God’s word publishes the event: The day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night (I Thess. 5:2).  To take part in the Rapture, a person must be saved!  The way of salvation has been fixed!  Jesus said, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me (John 14:6).

Backslider, receive the salvation Jesus offers you.  The Bible carries a positive promise to those who are willing to return to God; it is found in the heartwarming story of the prodigal son.  Jesus says, Joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance (Luke 15:7).  In view of that beautiful promise, I hope you will be inspired to submit your life completely over to Jesus.  And when you come to Jesus to be saved, abandon your old ways!  Don’t give Jesus just a piece of your life, for didn’t He say He wanted all of it?  Jesus said, Love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength (Mark 12:30).

Do you understand the dreadful results of your backsliding?  In case you don’t, I’ll list at least three of them for you:

(1) Your union with God has been broken.

(2) Your name has been removed from the Lamb’s Book of Life.

(3) You no longer have Jesus’ blood covering on your life; therefore, you are in great danger!  John 3:36b says, ...and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.

O backslider, God wants you to partake of His love, not His wrath!  Draw near to Him and He will gloriously save you!  Jesus loves you!

Did you know that Satan’s plan is to destroy you?  The Bible warns largely of this when it says, Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour (I Peter 5:8).  He has destroyed much of your life already, so why give him the chance to destroy your life even more?  Hasn’t the sorrow he’s caused you been painful enough to bear?  He’s caused your union with God to be broken and he now causes you to resist God and the holy life that is being offered to you!

O backslider, BE WISER THAN SATAN!  Turn your back on him and come running back to Jesus!  Examine the things in your life that you love more than Jesus and quickly get rid of them!  Satan has put those things in your life to lure you away from God!  He has succeeded in making you fall by using his evil trickery against you.  The Bible says, The thief cometh...to steal, and to kill, and to destroy (John 10:10a).

It is certain Satan waits to drag you off to the pit of Hell.  Don’t give heed to him any longer; instead, decide to follow Jesus!  When you follow Jesus, your life will be blessed!  Jesus said, I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly (John 10:10b).

No longer put off receiving Jesus as your Saviour, for while you do you give Satan more time to use his evil schemes against you.  You can break Satan’s hold from off of your life by asking Jesus to come into your heart!  When Jesus comes to abide in you, Satan will have no further hold on you!  In fact, he will have to flee from your presence!  Listen to what the Bible says about that: Submit yourselves therefore to God.  Resist the devil, and he will flee from you (Jas. 4:7).  What an awesome reality that is for the believer!

Be a believer in Jesus today!  Jesus is the “Gift” of “Eternal Life!”  You can be saved if you put faith in Him for what He has completed for you on the cross!  The Bible says, But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.  Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him (Rom. 5:8, 9).  Yes, only Jesus can pardon us from sin: He alone has paid our debt in full!  Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved (Acts 4:12).

It is important we realize this truth: Though Jesus became flesh to redeem us from sin, He stayed sinless while in His human body.  When He became flesh, He never stopped being God!  Thus, His “Blood” was completely holy and able to purify us from all sin.  Of Jesus, the Bible nobly proclaims, In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins (Col. 1:14).

Backslider, isn’t it wonderful to know that you can be saved?  That God’s forgiveness can be applied to your life again?  Yes, God will accept you back again if you repent of your sins giving your life afresh to Him.  Therefore, yield yourself to God!  The apostle Paul said, If thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thy heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved (Rom. 10:9).

Backslider, Christ awaits your response to His call to save you!  His “MERCY” is granting you the time you need to choose your eternal destiny! However, don’t risk waiting until tomorrow to ask Jesus to be your Saviour, for you don’t know what tomorrow will bring!  The Bible warns, For what is your life?  It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away (Jas. 4:14b).

Conclusion

Seek ye the LORD while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near (Isa. 55:6).

Jesus said, Behold I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me (Rev. 3:20).

O backslider, only you can open your heart’s door to Jesus; submitting your all to Him is the vital key!  Jesus is a Supreme Being Who can do all things, but He won’t force you to accept Him into your life!  If you must be forced to accept Jesus, it means that you don’t love Him enough—or at all!  Don’t settle for that flaw in your life: Humble yourself and admit your need for God!

Be Saved Today!

He that hath the Son hath life: and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life (I John 5:12).

O backslider, accept the salvation that God has for you.  Open your heart to Him and be saved.  King David, who trusted in the Lord, said, O taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the man that trusteth in him (Ps. 34:8).

How to be Saved

(1) Believe that Jesus is the Son of God and that He died for you!  Believe He is the Saviour for all mankind.  The gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord (Rom. 6:23b).

(2) Admit you are a sinner.  The Bible says, For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God (Rom. 3:23).

(3) Repent: be sorry for your sinful state.  Your sins offend God!  If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness (I John 1:9).

(4) Invite Jesus to come into your heart.  The Bible says, But as many as received him, to them he gave power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name (John 1:12).

May God bless you richly,
Mrs. Maureen M. Salliby
